Fifty years ago, Chevrolet introduced a car that would become one of the most revered vehicles in its sports car lineup. Code named XP-836, the Camaro was Chevrolet’s contender in what would become one of the hottest segments in the automotive industry. The Camaro was Chevrolet’s entry into the pony car market that was wildly popular in the 1960s. It’s been said the word Camaro is derived from the French language meaning friend or comrade. That’s a pretty fitting way to describe a car that’s been a companion with many of us for half a century. Let’s turn back the clock and look back at 50 years of classic Camaros. Introduced as a concept at the 2006 North American International Auto Show, this Camaro features retro styling cues fused with modern technology. Its long hood, sculpted fenders, and rear tail lamps are reminiscent of the 1969 model, yet the engine and powertrain are packed with modern-day technology. For those that believed the Camaro died in 2002, this new iteration was welcomed by Camaro enthusiasts everywhere when it was unleashed in April 2009. Since 2014 is the golden anniversary of the Mustang, what better way to celebrate than looking at some rare and special edition cars? Many of these were offered regionally and were available in very limited numbers. That’s why many of these are so rare today and are hardly seen except at shows featuring the Mustang. It’s hard to believe this iconic car has been around for 50 years. Of all the pony cars, it is the only one with a consistent production run for the last half century.
